Factsheet: Natural Resources Stewardship Programme in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the fastest growing economies globally, aspiring to achieve prosperity through economic growth. The country is the second most populous nation in Africa with a population of around 120 million people. Economic development combined with high population growth is increasing the pressure on Ethiopia’s natural resources, while leading to higher levels of energy consumption, solid waste generation and environmental pollution.

Increased collaboration between the public sector, private sector and civil society is required since no actor can solve these issues on their own. The Natural Resources Stewardship Programme (NatuReS II) facilitates and supports these public-private-civil society partnerships using the stewardship approach. Through collaborative action, the partnerships contribute to a more sustainable use and management of natural resources and advance a socio-ecological transformation towards more sustainable economic development in Ethiopia.
